I served in the Persian Gulf War. When I got out of the military in 1993, I was having alot of pain in my hands. The doctors at the VA couldn't diagnose it at first but after some various diagnosis they diagnosed me with Ritters Syndrome. The pain was pretty severe and I had some swelling. They treated the condition with steriod shots. I had a little relief but the condition never completely went away. I simply didn't have the time to continue to go to the VA everyday and play the game that they wanted me to play. I wanted treatment so I could go on with my life so I could make a living for myself and my family. I finally had to go on with my life the best that I could. I was getting a small disability rating from the VA which they decreased to 0%. I didn't fight it because I figured the VA was going to play that game and I didn't have time for it. I had to take care of my family regardless of the pain. For a few years, the pain was bearable but recently it has come back with a vengence. I can barely pick up things now and the pain is so severe that I yell out when I reach for something. I just think it is pretty sad that these men and women go to war or serve our country and the medical treatment and beaurecratic system designed to help these hurt soliders is so poor. These soldiers will come back from War and have many illnesses or injuries and find that the system is so inadequate that either they have to go to a clinic everyday for months to show the disability or try to do the best they can to handle the pain and pay the bills. They end up starving before any real medical is provided.
