I see the effects that Diabetes has on many families - because it's not just the person afflicted - it's their family and friends, as well. Where I work, there is a high incidence of this insidious disease. Though we work with all ages in our community, in this instance, we focus on the middle-aged and elderly. One of the ways we offer help is by simply reading the labels on their medicine. Many of our friends in this community do not know the difference between a brand name and a generic name, so they end up taking double the medicine they need - no wonder they don't feel well! We also try to help them understand the disease itself and what kind of lifestyle changes they need to make to help themselves. We help them understand how to eat the various foods: which are better for diabetics and how to limit the amount of intake. For those who listen, it has been very rewarding! We see glucose levels that were out of control drop to much better numbers; and, our community is enhanced by one more person who can get up, go out and help spread the word - Yes, there is hope!
