My youngest child is Cole, who is now 17. I still remember how tightly I clutched him sitting at his father's graveside when Cole was only 3 years old. It seems he was always in the background in those days. He was the youngest of 4. The two older boys were in their teens and went through a lot of acting out. It took all my focus to deal with them. Then there was his sister, at 8 she had always been 'Daddy's little girl'. Cole and Lindsey were very close. i think the problems their brothers brought on us made them closer. We moved away when Cole was going to the 6th grade. Away from the town and the house we'd lived in when he was born, but hopefully to a new start. A few months later, Cole was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. I remember how alone I felt sitting in his hospital room, and how very small he was. Four years have passed and I can't say it's been easy, but with the help of God we're doing o.k. I look back on one afternoon when I ran to the store after a long day of trying to stabilize glocose readings. I set in my car and wondered why this happened to us. Through my tears I saw a car pull in next to us. There was an obviously handicappped boy in the back seat. His mother got him out and went in the store. Later I saw them as I was shopping and thought how selfish and self centered I was. I had nothing to complain about. Cole has a disease that can be monitored and dealt with to the point that he can live a normal life. There may be a few inconviences along the way, but my son can do all the things he sets his mind to. This mother was dealing daily with her son's problems. Instead of crying for us, I should have been trying to bring blessing to those with real problems, to mothers who long ago had to put aside their dreams for a so called normal life. These are the families that deserve our help, respect and admiration. These are the heros.
