Recently my grandmother was diagnosed with liver cancer. Unfortunately, by the time it was diagnosed, it was too late to stop the spread of the disease. We've been told that she only has a few months to live and all we can do is make her as comfortable as possible. She wants to die at home so we're all taking turns flying out to spend time with her. She lives in Indiana near her sisters. I flew back to take care of her for a week. It was bittersweet. I loved the time I spent with her but at the same time it was hard to see her in pain. The less medication she's on, the more pain she's in. The more pain medication she's on, the more she sleeps. She says she doesn't want to sleep away the last months of her life! Even harder was to see her fear. She's afraid of dying. I find strength in my religion, but grandma isn't religious so she has many questions about what happens after you die. We all just give her what comfort we can and tell her how much we love her. The strangest part of it all is that she's been healthy all her life. We never expected anything lke this. We're all in shock.

She's leaving behind 5 children, 11 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren. Her legacy will live on through all of us. I hope someday she'll look down on us from up above and be proud of the family that she created.
