My mom became very ill this spring and had to be taken to her small local hospital. The hospital is struggling with many cutbacks and has a poor community reputation at this time; therefore, we worked to have her moved to an academic hospital 3 hours away. The best route for this transfer was by helicopter. She was now intubated and in an ICU on medicines to keep her pressure at a level compatible with life. The weather was bad and did not look like it was going to clear for days. I was worried she would not survive the wait. She was not doing well.
We did not know an angel with instrument rating for flying in such conditions was about to arrive at the local medical helicopter site. He arrived took the assignment and within 5 hours my mom was in the academic hospital, receiving the latest in evidenced based medical care.
Three months later she is at home, ambulating with a walker, eating a normal (salt restricted) diet and able to get out with the use of a wheelchair for distance activities. I am amazed. I thought she would not live out that first week.
Medical air transport was a life saver for my mom and the team was an inspiration and breath of hope for my family. Truly angels in flight suits. Thanks.
