At the beginning, for me, I guess. My husband and I are self-employed for more than 20 years and cannot afford a personal health plan for our family. I used to get the insurance when you register the kids for school - an accident policy. Lucky for us, our kids are very healthy and only had to use the insurance when there was an injury. They covered most of it and the rest we paid. OK with me. My husband and I on the other hand, had nothing as far as coverage for us. Most of our money goes to insurance for our house and cars, so medical was not an option. Affordability isn't an issue if you have no money for a policy in the first place. We just floated along in our lives without it and have been very lucky! In 2005 I went to an oral surgeon for a tooth to be extracted. He sent me to the local emergency room with blood pressure 205/135. Since then I had to apply for an emergency medical card from the state. Otherwise they would have sent me home. I had test after test after test and med after med, at times taking 18 pills a day. Now I take 13 a day and before this I took nothing. I just wanted to find out why this was happening and how to correct it. They now have decided to stop looking for a cause and to treat me with medicine. I smoke cigarettes, but that seems to be the only reason for the problem. I am 5'7" tall, 135lbs and 46 years old with no other health problems. Since my youngest child has turned 19 the card ran out for us all. I don't think I can afford this medicine and the doctor so what now? I lost my Father-in-law and Father in less than 6 months this year, my dad on my daughter's birthday. On Mother's Day, my brother got into a car accident and broke his neck in four places. Like some sort of miracle he is alive, at home and walking with help - my help. The state pays me to be his personal assistant. Unless I get pregnant(fat chance) or become 65 or disabled overnight, I still have no insurance. I'm having a hard time affording the gas for work, so an affordable health plan may as well be on some other planet. So here I am, asking you for help. Any offered, you can trust, will not be taken for granted.
