I am a nursing student who wishes to better the world one person at a time. It's sad that a little dog that belongs to a celebrity can prance around in diamonds and yet the 47 million uninsured Americans, myself included, remain uninsured. Health care costs are absolutely ridiculous and yet our politicians can sleep at night knowing that there are people dying everyday because of disease and poverty. It's amazing what $4 worth of an anti-biotic can do; it could be a manner of saving someones life or letting them die. Children suffer as well. If a parent makes even a dollar over the "low-income" level, children can't get their immunizations, insulin, or other necessary medications that can help save their lives. Working in the health care industry I see first hand everyday what lack of insurance means for people. What about people with cancer? How can they afford chemo, radiation or even general nausea medications? Or what about the elderly who are tossed aside with only a little bit from a social security check to live on? Blood pressure, cholesterol and many other maintenance drugs are expensive, how can they afford them? America is supposed to be the land of freedom, opportunity, compassion and healing. If this is the sad reality and remains to be, then I am ashamed to call myself an American.
