The diagnosis is strep throat? A common childhood malidy I did really give it much thought. A prescription for antibiotic and we are on our way. But as soon as the prescription was done my son's sore throat was back. This went on for months. My doctor suggested a tonsilectomy. My health insurance said they wouldn't consider one until he had three cases within six months. During the six month period he had six cases. He was scheduled for surgery. Great? Only now he was so sick the strep had gone into the blood and was causing a blood poisoning call sepsis. He was hospitalized so very sick I thought we might lose him. They pulled him through enough for surgery. Everything will be fine after surgery. But, he never recovered. He was nausiated, vomiting and diarrea. His joints were swollen and painful. He was dizzy and light-headed. He complained of chest pain and shortness of breath. "Give him time," the doctor said. "He'll get better." Two months later he is not better and I took him to a pediatric specialist. He diagnosed rheumatic fever. Thought to have been irraticated from the US. Last known cases in the 1980's. I now know there are four new cases in my little town alone. My son is 9-years old. Formally in every sport or activity available here. Now he is weak, pale, sick most of the time. Suffers from reoccurring flare-ups, suffers effects from the medications. Suffers period. Rheumatic fever is a strep throat gone bad. Thank you to PacifiCare Health Plan for making us wait to have a PHYSICIAN recommended tonsilectomy. Now instead of a few weeks of discomfort my child will have a life-long issue. Mom
