I started horseback riding a few years back. I really enjoyed it and was a fast learner. We all fall from time to time, you just brush yourself off and get back on. One time, about three years ago I was practicing a canter and the horse changed his direction suddenly and I'd lost balance. We've all been taught the emergency dismount, to slide off the side, using the neck for some support as you fall.

However, it seemed everything was in slow motion at first: I realized that my bood on the falling side was still in the stirrup. The next thing I know, I'm face up in the sand, staring at the sky. I didn't land on my feet as I normally would (or even hit the ground on my feet and fall back), but fell on my butt/lowerback at an angle. I couldn't do anything but look up, I was so surprised. At first I thought the pain was just the same old bruises that you get from a fall, but something wasn't the same. I wiggled my fingers: all good. Check my legs, they move: good. I had to lay there for a minute, but I got back up and actually got back on the horse.

It was painful as heck, it's hard to describe. I had to sit in a position in a certain way, careful not to tense my back because that would hurt. When putting the tack away, I needed assistance to lift and brush. I limped my way back to my dorm, stopping by the local store for some pain killers. I knew something was wrong because I actually started crying, not of my own volition --something I don't do normally.

My parents picked me up to bring me to the ER, I could feel every single movement of the car, every crack in the road that we drove over, every breathe I made. It's funny the things and processes that are connected with your back. Even after about 8 tylenol and some motrin, my pain was 8.5 out of 10. I had fractured my L1 vertebrae and had to undergo physical therapy and wear a brace. Painkillers and muscle relaxants prescribed. I still have anxiety and developed depression afterwards.
