Everyone has a few extra pounds here and there. I'd been in better shape back in high school when I would work out everyday for an hour and a half. A few years later in college I wanted to lose a couple pounds and my new internship presented a lot of moving, stairs, and manual labor. I started dieting and going to the gym regularly. At first, the weight loss was gradual as usual. I felt great. I had a boost in energy and optimism, running up the stairs at work and just an overall peppy attitude. Eventually, however the weight loss started to plateau. Then the fatigue set in. My mind was dulled and I became depressed, which was unlike my normal optimistic self. I became concerned and talked to my doctor about it. After a few tests he said that I had a hypothyroid --that is my metabolism was slowed and my energy was low. He prescribed me levothyroxine, a hormone replacement and my mood and energy improved. Hormone replacement is something I will have to deal with for the rest of my life, but it is worth it to get rid of the depression and improve my overall health.
