I tend to learn new things all the time I learned today what an insurance donut is. First a little about myself, I have been HIV + since 1995 and with the graces of breakthroughs in medical science I am still here. However even with the new drugs out I had to go out on permanent disability in 2001. Because of that and 9/11 I decided to move back to my home town of Houston from NYC. The cost of living was more viable here. The kicker is my income has stayed the same but everything else has gone up in price substaintially from rent, energy, gas to groceries. Last year I had to turn to a local org to assist me with my copayments on my meds, doctors, and labs. Today the new charges took affect with my insurence carrier which requires me now to send my meds to a mail order place thats over 1000 miles away. The problem being I am now fully resposible for my copayments since this place is in another state the organization that help me with my copayments are chartered only for local phamacies. Because my disability income is a mere 1300 I do not qualify for state assistance the max there is 900. Keep in mind my rent is 800 a month which is pretty average here. So here is the donut my copayment is $300 per month which is 10% of the cost of my prescriptions. So looks like I am not going to get to live the dream i was hoping because there is no way I can afford the copayment on the drugs that are keeping me alive. The represenitive with United Healthcare told me I fall right in the hole of the donut and there was nothing that they could do for me. The other thing in this mathematical factor of things is I have only recived one increase of 3% in income since 2001. Since 2001 one the following increases have taken place, fuel 1.49 to 3.09 a gallon, Bread .59 to 1.99, electric $59 to $250, Auto insurance $87 to $140 per month, ground beef .89lbs to 4.59lbs, tomatoes .39 to 2.99 lbs, daily metro ticket (bus &rail) .75 to 3.25 per day , Dr copayment $10 to $50 and so on.
