I'm 27 years old and over the years I have had various forms of health insurance. Currently I have none, and have been paying for my medications out-of-pocket. This has allowed me to see the differences in price for medications when there is health insurance and when there isn't. For example, I have ADD and I am prescribed a medication that used to cost me $5 when I was able to afford health insurance. As a student with little time to work and school loans piling up, I had to cancel my health insurance because I could not come up with payments. Now I pay about $85 for the same medication, simply because I CANNOT afford health insurance. This is one of the major problems with health care/prescription management in this country. The way prescriptions and health insurance are handled make absolutely no sense to me. Through this, I have been able to find some support and some options. In my city (Seattle), there are a couple health clinics that operate the same as normal doctors' offices, but without the feeling of big business. The doctors who work there really want to be there to provide health care to those who are in need. There are pharmacies there, where you are charged according to your income. These clinics have been a godsend, and I recommend doing a search for health clinics in your city if you are in need of health care and medication and without insurance. I am also thankful for health savings plans and prescription savings plans because they can offer help without having to pay for traditional health insurance. I do see that healthcare is changing, and I am confident that more and more options will be established in this country. Every person deserves basic health care, regardless of their social/racial/professional 'status'.
