When it becomes necessary to buy prescriptions without the benefit of insurance coverage, call around to several pharmacies in your area and ask for the cash price of each medication you require. Most of the larger chain drug stores (e.g., Walgreen's, CVS) are more expensive than discount warehouse member stores like Costco. In fact, you do NOT need to be a member of Costco in order to purchase prescription medications. However, members do get opportunities for savings that non-members miss. A personal example of the difference between Costco and Walgreen's: I ordered a 'scrip at Walgreen's for which they wanted me to pay almost $45. I immediately called Costco from my cell phone right--in front of the pharmacist. The Costco pharmacist said that, for them, the medication I requested just increased in price due to a new manufacturer. What did Costco want to charge me for this medication? $10. Up from $7.50. I asked Walgreen's pharmacist to return my prescription so I could have it filled at Costco. She didn't apologize for the higher price Walgreen's charges but said it was a pricing consistent with all the stores in their chain. Costco DID apologize for the fact that their med went from $7.50 to $10. Go figure!
