A few months back, I woke up with horrible lower back and stomach pain, so bad that I could hardly roll out of bed. Because I was only covered by an "inadequate" Medicaid program, whom no one accepted, I never went to the doctor. This night I knew something was seriously wrong, and thought I may be experiencing appendicitis. I was in a panic, and the pain seemed to keep getting worse and worse as I moved around more. I decided to take my chances and hope that the closest urgent care/emergency room would have a look at me. The first one was closed, the second one I went to was very rude, and told me that they didn't accept Medicaid (big surprise) - and that if I wanted a physician to look at me, I'd have to wait atleast 30 minutes and pay $150 out of pocket. I felt as if I was being looked down on for not having adequate coverage. A little upset, I left and thought I'd give one more hospital a try. It was 3am at this point, and I was tired & in an extreme amount of pain. The third hospital was not as rude, but told me flat out that they could not see me. My eyes began to tear up and I said "thanks anyway", and as I was walking out the main doors, I was tapped on the shoulder by a nurse, who could see how upset I was. She pulled me aside, asked me a few questions - and figured out I was most likely suffering from a very bad bladder infection. She wrote me a script on the spot, and told me to specifically go to wal-mart, as they have antibiotics for $4. I was so touched that she could see how bad I was hurting and I even offered her money! She insisted that I just get home and take care of myself. That nurse deserves the best, and understands REAL people with REAL problems, without following the corportate & government policy!
