My husband was laid off Jan. 10 2008. I am on soc. sec. disability, very low amount, monthly. The payments started November 2007, not retroactive. We received the COBRA costs in the mail, OMG! If we pay for medical insurance for the two of us, it is over $900.00 a month. That leaves us short to cover the monthly bills. We only have rent, utilities, car ins., no car payment, charge cards but extremely low balances (2), but when you pay for food, etc., it is not enough. I went to the state of NH for medical coverage for me only; get this, our income is 2200 gross a month, they told us we have to pay a deductible of 1908.00 per month, then they will cover the rest of my medical bills, and we were shocked. I said that is sick, we would have to live on the streets. The case worker, Joleen, said yes, that is how it works in NH! We had 72.00 in the bank, no 401k, no stocks, I mean bare means to survive. My husband said there has to be a mistake they said no. we were almost considered poverty but pay out that for medical costs per month, like a car has a deductible of say 500 if we had an accident. I have serious medical problems, my med cost out of pocket 3000 a month but I will have to go without. I will not go homeless to live. I would rather die. (I had a stroke in 2006 among other issues) My husband means more to me and to have him live in a shelter while he looks for a job is ridiculous. This election is so important; health care is such an issue for people.
