At 83 years old, I could no longer handle to pain of what I thought was a hernia, so I went to the hospital. It turned out I had an incarcerated hernia which was wrapped around my intestines and appendix, and had caused my appendix to burst. I was already septic by the time I got there. I was still going through tests when my grand-daughter called and I spoke to her and told her I was fine and to stay home. I ended up being rushed into surgery, and fought for my life. I don't know if it was because of my age, but the staff didn't expect me to survive, and so they neglect to turn me to prevent bedsores. To make a long story short, I spent the next 10 months recovering in different facilities. In my 31 days at the hospital, I deveolped a stage 4 bedsore which required 3 debridement surgeries, a diverted colostomy, and I even lost 2 toes to dry gangrene. After they removed the dead tissue, I was left with a gaping hole in my back that my granddaughter took pictures of since the wound was so deep, my spine was exposed. I was able to return home after 10 months where my 27 year old granddaughter and her husband still take care of me. Needless to say, she contacted an attorney, and the experts that have looked at all of my records say that the hospital clearly neglected me and is at fault. Hopefully what happened to me will NEVER happen to any other Senior who deserves great health care.
