The first time I was diagnosed with breast cancer, I was 27 years old. I never thought I would have breast cancer so young. I was aware of the family history, but never imagined I would be diagnosed in my 20's. At first, my doctor thought it was a simple infection, but he ordered a mammogram as a precaution. The mammogram came back positive, and I was immediately scheduled for a mastectomy and reconstruction. Following surgery, I had gone though a tough regimen of chemotherapy, high dose chemo, followed by a stem cell transplant and radiation therapy. For support during this ordeal, I joined online support groups and shared my story and experiences with others. We were afraid that the extreme treatments would make me infertile. I was already married with a three year old girl, but I wanted another child. For seven years we tried to have another child. Just when we had given up hope, I became pregnant with my son. I was attending college at the time, but was determined to finish my bachelor's since I felt that I had a new lease on life. When my son was about a year old, I went to the doctor for a discoloration on my remaining breast. It turned out to be another form of breast cancer - Paget's disease of the nipple. Although the cancer was contained in the nipple, I opted for another mastectomy and reconstruction. Luckily, I did not require chemo or radiation. I graduated with my degree a year later. Although cancer has struck me twice, I have always tried to stay optimistic, and strive to better the lives of myself and my family. I am now working toward my Master's degree, and I have another child on the way. I am coming up on my 10 year mark since my first diagnosis. I wanted to tell my story because I want to inspire others to keep on living life, even after a cancer diagnosis.
