A few months ago, while student teaching, I came down with a case of shingles, and was prescribed some antiviral drugs and some time off of teaching. When I went to the drug store to pick up the prescription, the Pharmacist said that my insurance company had canceled my plan two weeks prior. I had no notification from the insurance company. When I called my insurance company, I was told that due to my age I had run out of eligibility, and that my insurance was being cut off. Thanks to the insurance company, I had to pay 5x the "covered" price of the prescription. About three weeks later, I received a letter in the mail offering cobra continuation coverage. It would have been helpful to receive that letter a few weeks before my coverage was to end (it would've also been nice to receive notice that my insurance was ending), so that I would have been able to avoid a lapse in coverage when I needed it. I also received a large bill in the mail from the Dr. I saw once they found out my insurance was nonexistent. Now, I must admit that the Dr. visit will be reimbursed because I have elected the cobra coverage, but my monthly insurance cost is over $400, even after I dropped the prescription, dental, and vision. I simply can't afford those extras. Hence, why I am writing this story in order to receive the prescription discount card. Hopefully, the discount card combined with getting my teeth cleaned at my alma mater's dental hygiene center, will save me from having to pay my insurance company any more money. Just for the record, the only reason I have elected to pay $400 a month for cobra is that I have a significant pre-existing condition....I have a hip-fusion. The following website shows what condition I had when I was a kid. http://www.aafp.org/afp/980501ap/loder.html Unfortunately, I was unlucky and my hip bone lost blood supply, and crumbled away. After going through most of Middle School on crutches, I found a doctor who could get me walking again.
