I am writing on behalf of my 21 yr old son, Jason. He has recently been diagnosed with bipolar, depression, and borderline personality disorder. He doesn't have health insurance and his drugs are too expensive for him to buy. He is unable to hold down a job and doesn't qualify for medicaid because he is unmarried and has no children. I have taken on several hundred dollars worth of his bills to help him. He is in a program now that will give him samples for free. The problem is if there are no samples available that month, he has to be switched to a different drug. We have found that not all drugs work the same and are tolerable with the rest of the medications he takes and he ends up back in the hospital. One of the drugs he takes is not available in sample for because there is a generic alternative. The generic alternative is $172 a month at Walmart. The pharmacist says that it is too new of a generic and the price will go down the older the drug becomes. He is being discharged tomorrow with a drug that he is to take 2 different strengths of. I called and he will have trouble getting sample of this one. The 50mg dose (the morning dose) is $125 a month and the 300mg dose (the bedtime dose) is $319 a month. My wish is for him to be accepted into a program to get the prescription coverage he needs to be able to hold down a job and be a functional human being in society. Thank you for time and understanding. Dena Carnal
