Often doctors are quick to jump to the conclusion that acute pancreatitis is caused by heavy drinking (alcohol consumption, that is). My husband, Sam, was recently hospitalized with a bout of acute pancreatitis. The Emergency room doctor insisted-to the point of being downright argumentative-that Sam had been drinking heavily. Now Sam admitted to the doc that he was an occasional social drinker, but because of Sam's appearance (long-haired hippie type), doc didn't believe him. Sam was released with strict instructions to abstain from alcohol-well, OKAY, WHATEVER. Of course, Sam teetotalled it all weekend only to have another, more severe bout of pancreatitis reappear on Monday. Another doctor was on the scene this time thankfully with a more open mind. It was eventually discovered that the blood pressure medication Sam had just started taking the week prior to the onset of pancreatitis-Lisinopril-was the culprit.
This story is not meant to malign doctors in any way. They are highly skilled professionals with the best of intentions. I am merely calling attention to the fact that "the most common cause" isn't always the cause, and things aren't always as they seem.
