I was recently diagnosed with cancer. Initially, though scary, I felt that it was an opportunity to focus on healing, good life, the bigger picture. Since then my greatest frustration and disappointment has been the medical community, the institutional almost robotic response to "disease," how so much of medical "standard of care" is defined by liability and general statistics based on studies done by the pharmaceutical industry--the only ones who have the money to conduct multi-million dollar studies- and how most doctors are wrapped up in this system because they can only refer to clinically-based, peer reviewed studies which often lack individual application and exclude studies by universities and independent laboratories. We get chemotherapy and follow up drugs with horrendous side-effects when potential "cures" offering overall heath benefits make headline news then languish for lack of follow up. Then because they don't have the same procedural cloak, and no "conscientious" health provider can justify their neglect and lack of integration into mainstream medicine in any other way, they're all bunched into a single category of "alternative" or voodoo medicine. Just look at the support that the clearly-biased, idiot at www.quackwatch.com gets from the medical community -- a man who works out of his basement, as far as I know has limited "medical" background and offers no "clinical" foundation for his scathing and emotion-ridden "opinions" which include "debunking" the entire field of chinese medicine. It's frustrating and deeply disturbing to feel that our society does not provide a foundation for and easy access to true integrative, full body healing. This might seem like more of a rant than a story, but it is the tale of attempting to confront a life-threatening disease through knowledge and understanding rather than the often more comforting "faith" based following demanded by so many western doctors however well-intentioned and good hearted they might be.
