British scientists have determined that your chance of dying of a heart attack doubles if you only get five hours of sleep every night. The study followed 10,000 civil servants over an 8-year period. Those individuals who reduced their sleep hours from seven hours per night to 5 hours or less were discovered to much more likely to develop cardiovascular problems and to die prematurely. Francesco Cappuccio, the study's author, explains that sleep is critical for the daily process of physiological restitution and recovery. Interesting enough, his study also found that people who sleep more than 8 hours per night also die at twice the normal rate.
