A new study, jointly conducted by the University of Waterloo and the University of Sussex, points to the possibility that anorexia may be caused by fetal exposure to certain maternal hormones in the womb. Researchers examined the medical records of thousands of Swedish twins. While the vast majority of anorexics are women, the researchers found that male babies who had female twins were just as likely as their sisters to develop anorexia, a serious eating disorder that can be fatal. The researchers are hopeful that the findings will help in the future development of medications and other therapies.
