According to researchers at Pennsylvania State University, a teaspoonful of honey works better at controlling coughs in children than over-the-counter cough syrups. According to study author Dr. Ian Paul, honey controls coughing by coating the throat, thus protecting it from irritation. Children who were given a spoonful of honey before bedtime were able to sleep thru the night, and their coughs were soothed. This is especially good news because childrens' OTC cough meds can be dangerous.
