In 1995 i had surgery to correct a birth defect of my ureters and the results were wonderful. My urologist helped me so much. I got along great over the years until 2002 when i started urinating so much that i couldn't stay on my job. It escalated to having to sleep in the bathtub at night because as soon as i would leave the toilet I would have to run back, literally up to five times per hour. I had been through all of the overactive bladder medicines and they only shut down my kidneys all together, and there was no infection in my tract to be found. This horror continued until my urologist decided to do what is called a hydrodistention of my bladder to observe it in a stretched state from inside. It was then that he confirmed that i had a chronic bladder disease known as interstitial cystitis. Finally my horror had a name. But to this day even though I have been professionally diagnosed and am on the drug Elmiron to help my condition, family members say i am making up my illness and that Interstitial Cystitis is an excuse to get sympathy and that all IC patients are crazy. They say we imagine our pain. I am constantly ridiculed and made fun of by the family. I am a member of several IC web boards and sites where i have met so really nice IC friends who go through the same thing day after day. Very few people are willing to accept that we suffer greatly. We become cast out people or shut ins. The anguish we go through is like a nightmare. I live this every day and i see my friends and other IC sufferers endure this ridicule. Sadly there are even some doctors out there who tell us its all in our heads and tell us to go take an aspirin or tylenol and just brush us away. It's time we were heard and understood. Interstitial Cystitis is not a game. It is for real. The pain is real and it can destroy lives and happiness. Some of us have committed suicide to get away from the ridicule we endure.
