Jan 29 2006 I went in for reconstructive surgery on my left foot.
It was from an old injury and to the point of I could hardly walk.
When the surgeon took the cast off at the end of Feb, I had an infection on one of the incisions on the instep, about the size of a half dollar.
We treated it and cleaned , but it continued to get worse to the point I had to have emergency surgery on March 12 to remove the plate he had put in, plus as much infection as he could. He also referred me to have a daily nurse come in to pack and redress the wound . Which was not about 6 " long, 3 " wide and 2 1/2 " deep,
I eventually ended up with a machine called a wound vac., which is attached to the wound with tubes running up to the machine to pull the infection out, and bring fresh blood to the surface to help heal.
I had that on for several months.
All the time on crutches and with one of those boots on.
Now it is Dec and i am still in the boot., Still in pain. And still have a wound. Much smaller. But its not going away. Its about 2" llong, 1/2"wide and 1/4" deep with one side a bit deeper because it wont heal.
Ive seen a foot specialist now for 2nd opinion. Both the surgeon and specialist say the same thing., My leg needs to be amputated.
I cant believe something that was supposed to help has come to this.
I am now getting a referral to the Mayo Clinic. I am not going to have an amputation without another opinion.
The surgeon has pretty much washed his hands of me at this time.
I pray it does not come to amputation.
