How study worked

Paul, who authored one of the earlier studies showing over-the-counter cough and cold products were largely useless for kids, recruited 100 kids - and their parents - who had upper respiratory infections. He asked one third of the parents to give their kids a spoonful of buckwheat honey in a non-caffeinated drink, another third got the correct dose of cough medicine for the age of the child, and the remaining third got nothing.

He gave parents a questionnaire to fill out on the first night and the second night of their child's illness.

He asked them to rate on a scale of 0 to 6 how frequently the child coughed, how well the child slept, and how well the rest of the family slept.

The treatment that fared worst was no treatment at all. Honey got a better response on all questions than cough medicine. Paul said that the differences between honey and cough medicine were too small to be statistically significant. But then significance is in the eye of the beholder, he said.

"Parents perceived that there was a benefit, so that is significant," he said.
