Saturday is World AIDS Day, and Minnesotans will join others in the United States and more than 200 other countries in taking action against the deadly disease.

Nearly 7,000 people a day around the world contract HIV, the virus that leads to AIDS. More than 33 million people worldwide are living with HIV and AIDS, and 300 new cases are reported in Minnesota each year, the state Health Department said today.

Other numbers from Minnesota, since AIDS first surfaced:

• More than 8,200 HIV cases have been diagnosed.

• More than 2,800 people in Minnesota have died.

• More than 5,500 people are living with HIV/AIDS in the state.

"We continue to see higher infection rates among our communities of color when compared to whites," Peter Carr, director of the state Health Department's HIV and sexually transmitted disease section, said today in a news release. "Statewide, rates for African-Americans and Latinos were nearly 11 and 9 times greater, respectively, than [for] whites. Rates for African communities were over 20 times greater than for whites."

A host of events are being held in the Twin Cities area and elsewhere in the state to mark World AIDS Day. For details, visit www.startribune.com/a3717.
