Because of growing concerns about a flu pandemic, the World Health Organization (WHO) has brought in new rules effective June 16th. The WHO requires member states to immediately report anything that could result in an international public health emergency. The new rules, or statements of principle, were adopted to limit the spread of infectious diseases and minimize disruptions to travel, trade and economies. SARS, which killed about 800 people in 2003, showed how quickly and how far a new disease can spread. It also showed that containing a new disease requires timely reporting and cooperation between countries, and that a country acting alone can't protect itself from public health threats.
