Don't always rely on doctor's recommendations. A couple of years ago I went in for a colonoscopy. They discoverd some nodules that were too far up the colon to be snipped out. So they recommended that I see a surgeon. I did.

After an assessment he said the only alternative was surgery where I would be cut open, the nodules surgically removed. I would then have a six week recovery period. I was told this was major surgery and carried with it a number of risks not the least of which was major intestinal infection. They told me it would be a six month wait for the surgery as it was only performed by one special surgeon and he was booked up. I didn't want to wait for six months to see if the nodules were cancerous. Nor did I want to wait for six months, if they were cancerous, to let the cancers grow.

I said I would go home and think on it. What I did was to do some research, primarily on the web. I went on line and searched the sites for two major university teaching hospitals in my area. I discovered that one had a very extensive cancer center. When I entered that site I found they had a special center for colonoscopies and there I discovered a page describing exactly my malady and an outpatient method of removing them via an operation very similiar to a colonoscopy. I called them. They worked me into their surgery schedule the next week. I was operated on at 9 am. Home by 1 pm. Back to work the next day. And two days later was told the nodules were not cancerous.

Please, always get a second opinon.
