The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition recently published a report that showed post-menopausal women experienced a reduction in cancer rates when they took vitamin D combined with calcium. The study looked at almost 12,000 post-menopausal women from rural eastern Nebraska. The cancer risk was halved in the group that took 1,400 to 1,500 mg of supplemental calcium plus 1,100 IU of vitamin D3. "This is a safe, inexpensive way of preventing cancer," said Joan Lappe, a professor at the Creighton University School of Medicine in Omaha, who headed the study. "And you know, it just seems like it's worth trying."
