What do you do when you make too much money for state sponsered health insurance, but too little for "regular" private health insurance? Right now I am currently work 3 jobs, none of which offer insurance because they are all part-time. I have a college degree, but unfortunately I chose a profession that does not pay very well (social work). I am struggling to get some experience under my belt so that eventually I can go to graduate school and raise my income level. In the meantime, I have been on the phone with a certain private insurance company (three times just this morning), attempting to receive health coverage. The one snag is, in order to recieve "continuous coverage" from my old policy which ended in April, I will need to back pay the monthly premium to 4 months ago. I'm afraid that I don't have $800 lying around---not to mention my monthly prescriptions that I buy. They said that if I don't go the "continuous coverage" route, I may be ineligilbe due to pre-existing conditions and there also may be waiting periods that I will be subject to. Can they make it more difficult if they tried?? Everytime I am on the phone with these people, I feel as if they are going out of there way to avoid providing insurance---and I'm probably right. So now I'm trying to decide if I should quit two of my jobs, which would then make me eligible for state sponsored health coverage...but of course leave me with less money for all my other bills. I'm wondering what else can be done in this situation. I feel as though I'm completely being taken advantage of and I'm sure others feel the same way. This country really needs to take a look at its priorities. More and more people in the middle class are losing their homes and bankrupting themselves due to outrageous medical expenses. Medical care should be a right that every American has, just as a public education is a right for everyone. We need to move away from employer-sponsored health insurance--anyone else agree?????
