16 years ago I was pregnant and excited about the birth of our 3rd child. Minutes after he was born the doctor came to my husband and myself and told us that our son had Down Syndrome. We were confused. Didn't that happen to older people? I was only 28.
No matter the reason this was my son, I bonded with him, loved him unconditionally. He was coming home with me.
Right after his birth I went back to work doing daycare in my home. I read as much as I could about Down Syndrome and the cause. There is none I found out, and the average age of a woman giving birth to a child with Downs, you guessed it 28! Wow!
Well, through hard work my husband worked his way up from "janitor" to an "Informational Scientist" in a large corporation in our town. I was very proud of him. However working for large corporations didn't mean job security. 4 years ago it was bought out and he lost his job. I went to work in a factory, but had an accident ( a concussion) within about 8 months making it impossible for me to work in a "normal" job. I needed to get a job that I could sit down at. I worked hard at getting a certification as an administrative assistant. Trying to find a job in that field which would give benefits and pay well is near to impossible in our town. We didn't want to move so our son could stay near friends and relatives. We've lost our benefits, our income, but not our spirits. Our son does much more than expected, he is considered high functioning, a joy to be around, a ball of fire. He is constantly encouraging those who may be down on themselves, yet he expects a lot from himself. It's because of him that I continue to work hard at becoming the best mom I could possibly be.
Our son needs medication that is expensive. His needs are more important than ours. My husband and myself are on about 7 different medications , he needs cholesterol medication, but we can't afford it. This is why I'm here.
