I decided to try out the vision discount plan offered through United Project. I had some difficulty trying to use it, because United Project is kinda new to the vision plan, and the plan did not recognize the membership number that was generated by United Project.

Ultimately, I found that a number of providers in my area participate with the vision plan. I selected one, and called to ask pricing for an eye exam with contact lens fitting. I was quoted a price of $175, but was immediately informed that if I did not have insurance I would only be charged $125. I then asked about the vision discount plan, and was told that the $125 price was what I would be charged.

Upon calling the vision plan, I was told that vision plan members were really supposed to receive a discount that was different than what someone without the vision plan would receive. Even though I would only be getting the standard everybody discount, I decided to just get on with it and made an appointment.

Although I did not get a special vision plan discount on the exam, I was offered 20% off my contact lens purchase based on the vision plan membership. Nonetheless, I was able to find the contacts substantially cheaper through online retailers.

The bottom line is that the vision plan did not save me a dime, but at least I was offered the 20% off of the optometrist's relatively steep prices on contacts.
