Our family does a lot of camping and we have a number of outdoor activities through the summer. So, West Nile virus is a concern. About 1500 people in the U.S. got sick last year from West Nile and 177 people died according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). For the second year in a row, West Nile was reported in all 48 continental states. Some states are cutting back on testing of dead birds and mosquitoes, maybe because the numbers seem low. However the CDC thinks this is unwise. Most people who get infected don't get sick. The CDC, with their fancy formulae, estimate that over 200,000 were infected. They recommend continuing mosquito control programs, monitoring and research into prevention strategies. Our family stresses awareness and personal protection - stay out of low growth damp areas, wear long pants and long sleeve shirts, keep to more open areas where there is a breeze, use insect repellent and such. So far, we're OK. Here's hoping you take care, too.
