Hello, I just wanted to talk a little bit about the use of steroids in treating asthma, because I find there is a lot of confusion about this.

The steroids used for treating asthma are not remotely like the steroids you hear about baseball players abusing. They are a synthesized version of a natural hormone which your body makes to deal with stress and they work by cooling down inflammation.

When someone has an asthma attack, the muscles in the very small branches of the tubes that bring oxygen into the lungs spasm and block the tubes. And every time they spasm, they get a little bit irritated and inflamed and that swelling blocks the tubes also.

Puffers and nebulizer treatments work by making the muscles relax, but they do not help with the swelling and inflammation.

Because of this, if you are needing a puffer or nebulizer several times in one day, it is important to see your doctor to get the steroid started before the swelling gets out of control.
