About 2 months ago my grandmother was diagnosed with liver cancer. Three weeks ago I took care of my grandmother for a week and it was great to spend time with her. When she was awake, she acted like the grandma I know and love. I've been calling her on the phone since then but I can tell that her health is steadily declining. The doctor guessed that she had 2 to 6 months to live but told us in private that he expected her to last closer to 2 months. It's about that time now. In the last week, she has turned more and more jaundiced- even her eyes are yellowing. She can't get up by herself at all and is in bed all the time now. When she asks for something to eat, she eats one bite and is done. I know that's one of the ways the body starts shutting down. I know she's near the end, and it makes me so sad. At the same time, I'll be happy that she will be out of pain soon. Just about everyone is flying out to see her this weekend. I leave for the airport in a couple of hours but I wont arrive until late tomorrow night so I wont get to see her until the next morning. I hope I get to hold her hand one more time... but I'm afraid I won't make it there in time.
