US Congress, Bristol-Myers Squibb Co, Sanofi-Aventis SA, Apotex
My parents are now forced to pay more then 4 times as much for the brand, a 400% increase in cost (!), as opposed to taking the generic version of Plavix called Clopidogrel. Plavix is taken by approximately 48 Million Americans is manufactured by Sanofi-Aventis and parther Bristol-Myers Squib, companies that forced Apotex to stop manufacturing generic version. A disastrous ruling last year where federal judge blocked the distribution of generic version of Plavix by Apotex Inc, after he concluded that Apotex could not prove that they had a valid patent to sell the generic version of the drug. In his decision U.S. District Judge Sidney H. Stein wrote: "Although there are competing -- and substantial -- public interests at stake on both sides of this litigation, the balance of those competing public interests slightly favors Sanofi," the judge wrote. "The public interest in lower-priced drugs is balanced by a significant public interest in encouraging the massive investment in research and development that is required before a new drug can be developed and brought to market." You the public be the judge – are you interested in "lower-priced drugs" or "interested in encouraging the massive investment in research and development", while paying a price increase of 400%? You know where are stand on the subject...
