There is a law, the Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act, that requires clear labeling so people with allergies will know what is in the food they buy. Over 160 foods can trigger allergic reactions, but it is usually the protein in foods like milk, eggs, tree nuts, shellfish, peanuts, and soybeans that is the problem It is responsible for more than 90 percent of all food allergies. So the law requires that these food must be clearly identified in a food's ingredient list. The law applies to packaged food, including baby formula and supplements. It doesn't apply to meat, poultry, egg products, alcoholic drinks, or vegetables.

Even if you read the label, you still have to be careful if you have severe allergies. You have to know ALL the names of something that you're allergic to- sometimes there's more than one name for it so you might not recognize it on the label. And then there are cross contamination issues... mnms without peaunts aremade in the same factory as the ones with nuts. Or, if you're deathly allergic to fish and you order chicken at a restaurant, you might think you're safe... except they probably cook the chicken and the fish on the same grill, causing cross contamination. Cross contamination happens all the time.... scary stuff for those with severe allergies.

Yep, Cheerful, I agree about the cross-contamination aspect. I've noticed lately that some food labels are even specifying if peanuts are used in their manufacturing plants at all. I would imagine that if you are allergic to peanuts, you have to be really careful about eating any type of chocolate candy!

There are a great deal of people that really have to watch ingredients, kind of restricting but better than the alternative. Sissy

I know that a lot of the major airlines have quit serving peanuts. This is because people with severe allergies to peanuts can be affected just by being in the same room with someone who's eating them. My former employer is violently allergic to seafood. Any time we went out to lunch or dinner with her, we could never order seafood because just being near it could trigger an anaphylactic reaction.
