It seems like I can't ever satisfy my parents, especially my dad. He thinks I'm weird, but I don't think I'm all that different from others' my own age (I just turned 21 last month). I've never been any good at sports, and I think that really irks him. I don't know how to get his approval, no matter what I do. Has anybody else gone thru something like this? Do parents ever like their kids? |

Sparky, hang in there! Many kids have problems with their parents during adolescence and young adulthood. My son and I cerainly had our rough spots in his late teens and early 20s. Your dad may just be having trouble letting you go and stand on your own two feet. Good luck! |

I'm 35 and I still struggle to be accepted by my parents. Some people are more accepting than others and that's just thier personality. I've stopped butting my head against the wall because I know my parents will never change. Instead, I avoid topics that cause stress and only bring up topics that I know we'll agree on. Is there anything you and your dad have in common that you can do together? Men tend to bond by doing things while women tend to bond by talking. Find something you can do with your dad that you both enjoy, even if it's only going to a movie together. Believeit or not, for men that counts as bonding! |

Some parents have trouble accepting themselves and that is the true problem. Realize and understand that just because he has a problem, it doesnt mean that you have to. Live your life and make YOU happy, that is what counts. And yes I have gone through the same thing!

Aye aye Sissy! Love yourself. Sometimes there's nothing you can do to please other people, no matter how hard you try. |

If you can't get acceptance from your parents, try to find it other places - you aren't the only person to feel like you feel - it just takes some time to find your 'tribe' - the world is a big place, and you won't be living at home forever - try to remember that you are OK - God doesn't make mistakes... |

Hello Sparky.. yes, I have been there.. my step-father made my mother kick me out of the house when I was 16. He did the same thing to my sister when she was 13. He told her that either we went or he did..
Our relationship actually improved after we moved out somewhat.. However, as stated by others, it might help if you find something that you find in common, ball games, movies, or something that you can do together. Good luck.. |
