Post topic: Skin Cancer - How Serious?

When I was growing up, there was no sunscreen, and everybody took pride in their summer tans. I experienced yearly sunburns, a couple of them very severe 2nd-degree burns. I have developed some nodules and growths on my lower legs that I am sure are skin cancer. I do not have any health insurance at the moment, however. Does anyone know how long a person can go without getting skin cancer treated? Is it dangerous? Thanks for your help!

Yes, I would think it could be dangerous. I am not sure where you can go for help unless you have a sliding scale clinic in your city. May look it up in the phone book or call your local health department. Get that checked out, it may be nothing but dont ignore it.

I too grew up with no sun screen - scarry!

Raven, you probably shouldn't take any risks by holding off on seeing a doctor and getting the growths removed. My dad was a deep-sea diver, who spent much of his time out on the ocean in boats. Starting in his 40s, he started getting a lot of skin cancers and nodules. Fortunately, he was able to go to the VA hospital's dermatology clinic to get them removed.

Is there a teaching hospital or a county hospital near you? If so, they often have sliding-scale fees for lower-income people. Get it checked out, girl!
