According to British researchers, antibiotics might be harmful in the long run if prescribed for sinus infections. The study involved 200 patients who were suffering from sinus infections. Half the group received antibiotics, and half did not. Researchers found that the patients who took antibiotics recovered from their sinus infections in the same amount of time as those patients who didn't receive antibiotics. Doctors are advised not to routinely prescribe antibiotics for mild sinusitis because greater exposure to antibiotics increases resistance to the drugs. This can lead to the drugs not working in cases of more dangerous bacterial infections.
