I've been thinking a lot lately about how unfair preexisting-condition exclusions can be when it comes to health insurance. Many states, including California, have outlawed this practice in group health insurance plans. The problem, however, is that these laws do not pertain to individual health insurance policies. And those of us who are freelancers and independent contractors usually are forced to seek out individual policies.
A good friend of mine underwent multiple surgeries as a child for scoliosis, which is a lateral curvature of the spine. Although she is now in her 50's and doing fine, she keeps getting turned down for individual coverage. Like me, she's a freelancer, with no access to group insurance. Her situation is especially frustrating in light of the fact that she never filed any type of claim for her back during all the years she was covered under her former employer's group health insurance. It just doesn't seem fair.
How does everyone else feel about this subject? Some type of health-care reform is necessary in this country, in my opinion. Should preexisting-condition exclusions be outlawed as part of the reforms? |

Not insuring someone because of pre-existing medical issues is just wrong! In my mind, you're either insured or you're not. If you have insurance, they should cover all your medical needs. End of story. They are either your insurance provider or not. It's like getting married and then only claiming to be married 6 out of 7 days of the week. You're either married or not, lol. |

No - insurance companies should provide insurance - period. Otherwise the deck is stacked against us - if we were perfectly healthy, we wouldn't need insurance. Insurers just want us to pay them for nothing. I hope legislators can get something done and make insurers cover people, regardless of preexisting conditions. |

One of our community members shared a story about "MRMIP through the state of California. It is a managed risk medical provider that will cover anyone ineligible to get health insurance the normal ways. They go through blue shield, blue cross and kaiser permanente" at http://www.mrmib.ca.gov I wonder if more states have programs like this?? |

Absolutely. The only trouble is that many people won't buy insurance until they get sick since the insurance company will have to insure them. I'm not sure how to get around that problem. |

I have been doing some research on how the insurance industry works and it is really sad for many. They exclude people on pre existing conditions, medications and even their physical stature. Without group benefits the individual plans are so expensive and the deductibles are even worse. I am not sure the system will ever get any better. There has to be a better way and I wish someone would hurry up and figure it out!
