Post topic: Safety of Diabetes Drug Questioned

Several research studies have raised concerns about the safety of 2 popular diabetes drugs called Avandia and Actos. One study found that Avandia, made by GlaxoSmithKline, doubled the risks of heart failure and raised the risks of heart attack by 42 percent. A second study found that Actos, a similar drug made by Takeda, actually lowered the risks of heart attacks, strokes and death but, like Avandia, also raised risks of heart failure.

In July, a federal advisory panel voted overwhelmingly that Avandia should remain on the market, even though it raised the risks of heart attacks. In June, the Food and Drug Administration said it would place its strictest warnings on the labels of both Avandia and Actos because of heart failure risks.

It is so difficult to know what to take and what not to take any longer. Thanks for the information - it is good!

I tend to be a little skeptical about new medications and their safety. It used to take years of laboratory and clinical testing before the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) would approve a new drug. Nowadays, it seems that the pharmaceutical industry pretty much tells the FDA what to do, IMHO. New drugs are rushed out way too fast, if you ask me. Many of the "older" drugs work just as well on many conditions. But the mass marketing of prescription drugs via television and magazine ads convince people that they must have the newest (and most expensive) drugs on the market. The pharmaceutical industry makes much more money on its patented brand-name drugs, rather than older generic drugs.

I agree, it is so scary these days with medications. I really avoid taking any of the brand new medications until they've been proven safety-wise for several years.

Raven,

I really feel that we have to be careful about what we put in our mouth.
