The past year or so, I've been having a lot of heartburn and acid indigestion. (Is there a difference between the two??) Anyway, I went to the Student Health Center at my university, and the doc said that I have gastro-esophogeal reflux disease (GERD). My sister has a hiatal hernia, and I'm wondering if maybe I have one too. Does a hiatal hernia cause GERD symptoms? Thanks for your help! :)

Hi, Sparky! Yep, the symptoms of GERD often occur in people who have hiatal hernias, which also tend to run in families. Have you had an Upper GI Series (you drink some barium) to rule out a hiatal hernia?

Unfortunately there were lots of things that people just had to live with in the old days!! I am proud that we have the technology that we have today even though it gets in the way sometimes!
