I have a friend who is scheduled to have prostate surgery at the end of the month because of cancer. I think he's having his prostate removed?? He said he's supposed to be in the hospital for 6 days and then he expects to come home and be fine. That seems like a quick recovery to me! Does anyone know what to expect when recovering from prostate surgery and if there's anything I can do to help make things easier for him once he gets home?

Hi, Cheerful! You should take a look at this government-run website. The link has great information about prostate cancer: http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/pdq/treatment/prostate/patient

Your friend's length of recovery will most likely be dependent on which type of surgical procedure his doc uses. It's nice he has a friend who is so concerned! :)

An update: when they did my friend's surgery, they found out that the cancer had spread further than they thought. Now he's scheduled for radiation therapy. I guess I need to do more research...

Oh, Cheerful, I am so sorry to hear that your friend's prostrate cancer was more advanced than the doctors had anticipated. I hope the radiation is able to treat it, however. Please let us know how he's doing. --Raven
