My 18-year-old nephew has just been diagnosed with Temporal Lobe Epilepsy, also known as Partial Complex Seizure Disorder. When he is going into a seizure, he oftens becomes enraged. He also has wild mood swings. Which medications work best for this condition, and does anybody know what causes it? There is no history of any type of epilepsy in our family.

My younger brother has temporal lobe epilepsy. The neurologist thinks he developed it after a head injury he received in a car accident. He doesn't have any grand-mal seizures, just loss of awareness for a few seconds. He says it's real hard to describe to people, but he gets a sense of deja vu right before it happens. He's been taking Tegretol for the past year or so, and it seems to help him a lot. I hope your nephew feels better soon! :)

I didn't know that anger and rage could be caused by epilepsy or other seizure problems. Is it difficult to get this diagnosed?

Yep, anger or rage is often seen in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy. It's often part of the actual seizure. It's not difficult to get it diagnosed by a neurologist. The doctor will order an electroencephologram (EEG), and a lab technician will place electrodes on the scalp. The EEG doesn't always give a 'positive' reading, however. That's why the neurologist will spend a good deal of time taking your medical history and the symptoms you're experiencing now.

I think that the medical history is a huge determining factor from what I have read. This is a great discussion - very informative! thanks everyone Sissy
