For the last several weeks I’ve had an urgency to take deeper breaths and I have a feeling like I am not getting enough air. Last time this happened was at work during our monthly meeting and I've had to leave work . I’ve been to a few doctors and they all say I’m fine. Anyone know what this could be?

I’ve had a similar problem – and it was anxiety, but it’s hard to know if it’s heart, asthma or some other respiratory conditions. If it's anxiety related, slow diaphragmatic breathing can help you move more air in and out of your lungs. I definitely suggest having it checked out by a board certified specialist.

Dahill, it sure sounds like stress to me. I often have the same need to take deeper breaths when I'm under a great deal of stress, such as a deadline coming up. I find relief, however, if I practice relaxation techniques and guided imagery.

I used to have a similar thing happen to me when I was in a crowd. this sounds strange, but someone told me that if I tapped lightly all over my head with my fingertips, it would calm me down. It looks kind of funny while you're doing it, but it worked for me - and it doesn't cost anything.

The same thing happens to me right before midterms and finals. My counselor at the student health center says it's real common with students. I try to take slow, deep breaths and imagine myself in a safe, comfortable place. That usually helps.

If you're still concerned that it might be asthma, ask to be referred to a specialist. My general practitioner didn't seem concerned and I had to demand to see a specialist. They have a breathing test you can do. When I took the test, they kept telling me to breathe harder and I couldn't, lol. Although my main doctor wasn't concerend, my specialist was! I'm glad I didn't listen to my first doctor and made a big deal about it!

Any breathing difficulties should be evaluated!
