Although canker sores are usually small, they cause great discomfort for many people. There is a new over-the-counter (OTC) medicine that greatly relieves pain from canker sores. It also promotes healing of the sores and shortens their duration. A recent study found that Cankermelts, which is a licorice-flavored solution contained inside a patch, typically shortened the duration of canker sores to about 3 days. The oral patches come in 36-patch boxes for around $20, and are available in most drug stores, as well as online.

My son gets the sores on the inside of his lip and he has trouble eating or drinking because it hurts. I had a doctor tell me to put the teething medicaiton used for infants on the sore and it would relieve the pain! Works like a charm! Sissy

I rarely get canker sores, but they sure are painful! I used to get them a lot as a teenager, when I wore braces for several years. I wish there had been some remedy for them back then, other than Campho-Phenique. I really hated the taste of that stuff, lol!

I know that there are a couple of other over-the-counter medications for canker sores, but I haven't had to use them. I do get occasional cold sores, however. What really helps my cold sores is an OTC preparation called Zilactin. It works great!!

we tried the melts and they work but they are a bit difficult to keep on the sore. there is also another med that comes in a tube that helps a great deal! Sissy
