Nelfinavir, a drug widely used to treat H.I.V. infection, was found to be effective against breast cancer cells that are resistant to currently used cancer drugs like Nolvadex (tamoxifen) and Herceptin (trastuzumab), according to the NY Times. Nelfinavir's brand name is Viracept. Now, only a year and a half after doing the experiments in cultured cancer cells, the researchers are using nelfinavir in a Phase 1 trial. Their main goal is to find out how large a dose can be safely administered.

Cheerful, thank you so much for giving us the latest information on this new drug for breast cancer! It's funny how drugs that are originally designed for one condition can later be found to help totally different conditions.

Thanks for the information! I agree, sometimes we just do not realize at the time what a med can do for us - or sometimes to us! Sissy
